Tools for improving the activities of laboratories of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan were tested

On June 10-11, 2026, the National Center for Expertise, together with the National Center for Public Health and FHI 360 in Kazakhstan, tested tools to improve the performance of laboratories within the sanitary and epidemiological control system of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The particular importance of these tools lies in the ability of the public health system to detect an outbreak with epidemic potential within seven days of its onset. For laboratory services, this means the need for timely diagnosis, prompt transmission of results, and readiness for early response.

NCE experts participated in the testing, including Aidar Adilkhanovich Sambetbaev, Farida Sagimovna Baekeshova, Gulzhan Tanirbergenovna Maksutova, Gulnur Bauyrzhankyzy Toktasynova, and Azel Serikzhanovna Aminova.

During the pilot, participants examined the structure of the comprehensive laboratory analysis tool for the Republic of Kazakhstan. It includes key areas: the national laboratory system, laboratory levels, antimicrobial resistance, and the identification of development priorities.

The practical part focused on discussing the indicators, criteria, terminology, and potential applications of the tool in real-world situations. Participants shared practical comments and suggestions that will be taken into account in the further development of the tool.

A turnaround time (TAT) assessment tool was also presented, allowing for the analysis of the entire testing cycle from sample receipt to result delivery, identifying bottlenecks, and improving the efficiency of laboratory processes.

Following the event, participants noted that the tools can become an important basis for systemic analysis of laboratories, identifying gaps, and improving the sustainability of the country's laboratory services.

FHI 360 in Kazakhstan continues to support the National Center for Epidemiological Control in developing laboratory services for sanitary and epidemiological control, improving monitoring and evaluation systems, and strengthening preparedness to respond to modern public health challenges.
