Food security is an integral part of economic well-being and a fundamental vector of national security. Food security is a priority area of government policy, as it covers a wide range of national, economic, social, demographic and environmental factors. Such a system includes the development of a strategy for national economic reform, sustainable development, the use of effective legal norms, and ensuring the length and quality of life of the population. In this context, the increasing number of cases of falsification of food products in terms of their labeling plays a special role. The need to introduce modern methods of detection, identification and quantification of GMOs into the monitoring system of the Committee for Public Health Protection of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan is beyond doubt. The introduction of modern methods and approaches will make it possible to systematically monitor facts of falsification of food products with the aim of timely implementation of preventive measures aimed at improving the quality of food products and consumer awareness.

On the basis of the virological reference laboratory for GMOs of the branch of the “National Center of Expertise” of the Committee for Public Health Protection of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the city of Astana, various samples of food products are being studied for the content of GMOs. During the study of food product samples, we discovered GMO screening markers.

As a result of the work, it was established that genetically modified soybeans and genetically modified corn were identified in the samples. Exceeding the permissible value of 0.9% was found in 5 samples of genetically modified soybeans, and genetically modified corn in 8 samples. Although the labeling of these products did not indicate the content of GMOs.

Based on the data obtained, it can be stated that as part of the ongoing monitoring of GMOs, cases of food falsification in terms of its labeling were discovered. In addition, the data obtained on the use of genetically modified plants of plant origin in food production require the use of complex modern methods and approaches, as well as international experience in monitoring food safety.
